Smoke-Free Public Housing

RHA is committed to enhancing the health and well-being of the community it serves. In order to comply with U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) regulations, RHA has adopted smoke-free policies and implements a smoke-free environment at all public housing sites.

RHA's Smoke-Free Policy is designed to create healthier homes for residents and healthier work environments for employees by reducing exposure to secondhand smoke and providing support to residents and employees who smoke and want to quit.

RHA prohibits the use of cigarettes, cigars, pipes, hookah pipes and electronic cigarettes in all living units and interior areas, including but not limited to hallways, rental and administrative offices, community centers, day care centers, laundry centers, and similar structures.  Smoking is also prohibited in outdoor areas within 25 feet from public housing buildings and administrative office buildings.

Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the United States. Secondhand smoke can trigger asthma attacks and lead to stroke, heart attack, cancer, and respiratory illness.  Eliminating smoking indoors and close to buildings is the best way to protect people from exposure to secondhand smoke.
